The Byzantine Empire faces extinction under its deranged emperor from its ancient and powerful Persian foe, unless something can be done about its misrule. A heroic figure arises from Carthage to challenge the fracturing Empire’s ruler, in a tale lived through a young Imperial Guards commander. A tale of loyalty, betrayal, majesty and passions that sweeps across the Eastern Roman Empire.

Reading this story for me was the equivalent of savoring fine dining in a seven course meal in Byzantium History. All this and being transported into a literary composition with words to musically carry the story along. It's an exceptional piece of art that gets your reading appetite started with getting to know all the characters, in a period of time that is so overlooked by authors. As you progress, you start to love the characters (some way more than others) like a fine wine. By the time the story has hit full course the suspense of how it will come together leaves you eagerly anticipating how it's options for conclusion will play out. A very well composed piece of literary art that everyone, especially lovers of history should enjoy for themselves.
Where do I possibly begin to review this tale? I guess the logical place first is the story. Wim Baren has shed enormous light on a pivotal moment in history as the Roman Empire fell into permanent disarray and other kingdoms, both more ancient and contemporaneous, began to fill the vacuum. It is a tale of power and fortunes won and lost, a battle of good vs. evil, the importance of honor, courage and duty and above all else, LOVE.
The story is also a warning against the darker side of human nature greed, ambition, lust, corruption, deceit, revenge and betrayal.
The second key element is the set of principal characters. Baren details each in such a way that the reader knows exactly what they look like, how they think and how they act. They are all very much alive. One understands both their dreams and their fears. Each rises differently to the moral dilemmas which are presented to them. The result is that for some, one finds love and unbridled admiration, for others, pity and melancholy and for a few, absolute hate and loathing. Romulus is the ultimate protagonist strong, handsome, brave, honest and loyal. Lilius is the exact opposite, evil to the core. The two loves of Romulus's life, Zenianthe and Lydia, are captivating. Both are incredibly beautiful to be sure. However, it is their inner values which are most appealing Zenianthe's selflessness and Lydia's strength. One cannot help but be mesmerized by them both.
Wim Baren is a remarkable writer. I was riveted by the The Crimson Emperor and look forward to his next Magnum Opus.
The author explores a period in history which is obscure to many of us, yet, fascinating as one begins to learn more. Furthermore, he does it in an artful way that reveals the human side of history. This is a wonderful story with a strong and accurate historical background without the burden of actually studying history. It covers a roughly ten year period of the Roman Empire in the city of Constantinopel (today's Istanbul, Turkey). I would go so far as to suggest that it compares very favorably with Ken Follett's wonderful books.
I strongly encourage readers of all stripes to give this book a try. It slowly but surely begins to consume one's attention with the added gift of reminding us how little (and also how much) the world has changed in fourteen hundred years!!
